How to configure Link aggregation?

$

0
For the meaning about Link Aggregation, please refer to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_aggregation

The following article were quoted from http://www.linuxhorizon.ro/bonding.html

Load Balance (mode=0, balance-rr)
Round-robin policy: Transmit packets in sequential order from the first available slave through the last. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

Failover (mode=1, active-backup)
Active-backup policy: Only one slave in the bond is active. A different slave becomes active if, and only if, the active slave fails. The bond's MAC address is externally visible on only one port (network adapter) to avoid confusing the switch. This mode provides fault tolerance. The primary option affects the behavior of this mode.

Balance-XOR (mode=2, balance-xor)
XOR policy: Transmit based on [(source MAC address XOR'd with destination MAC address) modulo slave count]. This selects the same slave for each destination MAC address. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

802.3ad (mode=4, 802.3ad)
IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic link aggregation. Creates aggregation groups that share the same speed and duplex settings. Utilizes all slaves in the active aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification.

Pre-requisites:
      1. Ethtool support in the base drivers for retrieving the speed and duplex of each slave.
      2. A switch that supports IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic link aggregation.
Most switches will require some type of configuration to enable 802.3ad mode.

Balance-TLB (mode=5, balance-tlb)
Adaptive transmit load balancing: channel bonding that does not require any special switch support. The outgoing traffic is distributed according to the current load (computed relative to the speed) on each slave. Incoming traffic is received by the current slave. If the receiving slave fails, another slave takes over the MAC address of the failed receiving slave.

Prerequisite: Ethtool support in the base drivers for retrieving the speed of each slave.

Balance-ALB (mode=6, balance-alb)
Adaptive load balancing: includes balance-tlb plus receive load balancing (rlb) for IPV4 traffic, and does not require any special switch support. The receive load balancing is achieved by ARP negotiation. The bonding driver intercepts the ARP Replies sent by the local system on their way out and overwrites the source hardware address with the unique hardware address of one of the slaves in the bond such that different peers use different hardware addresses for the server.

For example, if you want to setup 802.3ad, just enable the option "802.3ad", and connect both WAN and LAN to your switch. Be sure your switch supports 802.3ad, or it may not work.

Can I change N5200/1U4500 memory module to increase performance?

$
0
0
Due to the memory of the N5200/1U4500 need special memory timing. So, not all memory modules can work on N5200/1U4500. In case replace the Thecus certified module with another one, either the same or different size, the N5200/1U4500 might be unstable or no boot. The worst case we encountered is, some incompatible memory modules seem work fine at normal loading, but suddenly cause NAS locked up at heavy loading. It's so bad that may feel the memory module work but the N5200/1U4500 is unstable.

In addition, upgrade the memory size won't increase the performance.

Why performance doesn't improve under Link Aggregation mode?

Due network communication protocol limited, the link aggregation have advantage for multiple client trans data during heavy loading period, thus we can’t get perfromance advantage via single client.

Where is CPU / Processor Compatible list?

Some NAS specification table have an item called "Processor Compatible with" as like following list, but why I can't found the CPU / Processor compatible list?

It is for special quantity order or OEM mainly, and each CPU have difference behavior, TPD and else,  thus we have no CPU list to publish, but welcome to contact your Thecus account manager for target processor & pricing.

What the difference between Disk Security & RAID encryption?

Disk Security base on ATA Securuty protocol between HDD & BIOS:
http://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_ATA_Security_Mode
http://www.t13.org/documents/UploadedDocuments/docs2006/e05179r4-ACS-SecurityClarifications.pdf

RAID Volume with Encryption (RAID Encryption) base on Thecus OS from AES 256bit RAID Volume Encryption feature allows users to encrypt RAID volumes on their Thecus NAS with a writable USB disk. Once a RAID volume has been encrypted, no one will be able to access their NAS to retrieve data or modify settings without the USB disk containing the encrypted key; therefore, users’ precious data will be 100% secure even if someone has stolen their hard drives or the even their entire NAS server.

N12910SAS N16910SAS W12910SAS W16910SAS how many PCIe slot usable?

The N12910SAS N16910SAS W12910SAS W16910SAS have following physical slot:

Physical slot:
PCIe 3.0 x 16 1slot (PCIE6/4: single at x16 (PCIE6); dual at x8 (PCIE6) / x8(PCIE4)
PCIe 3.0 x 8 1slot (PCIE4)
PCIe 3.0 x 4 1slot (PCIE7: shared with M.2)
3.0 x 1 1slot (PCIE5)

Due the PCIe 3.0 x 8 slot share from x 16, thus for best expandability the PCIe x 8 slot for HBA card (link HDDs) used, and able to support an additional PCIe x 8 card only.

TYPE1: (current usage)
PCIe 3.0 x 16 1slot (PCIE6/4: single at x16 (PCIE6); dual at x8 (PCIE6) / x8(PCIE4)

How much screws for 3.5" HDD? 4 or 6?

The 3.5" HDD default design for 4 screws, due certain HDD need extra inner space for more disk platter and move 2 tradition screw holes location to the edge, thus some new HDD tray have this new screw holes only, for compatibility some new HDD & tray place tradition & new screw holes both.
And following WD & HGST specification about screw numbers for your reference:

How long can be available for N5810PRO internal li battery (BBM)

The N5810PRO internal li battery (BBM) doesn’t like laptop or external PSU, this function prevent from NAS AC power lose only. Since system found AC power lose, and would going to re-check AC power resume or not, if over 2 mins AC without resume, and NAS will going to normal power off process prevent from power lose leading RAID degrade or damaged.
